One aspect of snapshots that I find particularly fascinating is the way that composition is often really casual. From our 2009 point of view such carefree framing does not seem wayward, it now appears to be inventive. The idea of making a shot of tennis players before they are about to play is really novel. To show them from behind without any tennis court in view is, actually, a radical idea. Playing tennis in a suit is sort of strange also. Look at the Model T Ford peeping through on the right hand side. They have all driven to this farm location. It is summer, of course.
On Sunday 7 June at 1pm I will talk about Snapshots - The Vernacular in New Zealand Photography in the Gallery's Art Lounge.
